IBIZA’S MUST-SEES: 7 PLACES YOU CAN’T MISS
There’s much more to Ibiza than its unquestionably fabulous party scene and magnificent beaches. By exploring its history, local culture and lesser-known spots, you will discover the authentic soul of this island.
In this post, THB hotels recommends seven sites simply not to be missed if you really want to delve into the true spirit of Ibiza.
1. DALT VILA: A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME
Perched at the top of the island’s historic centre stands the ancient walled city of Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Construction of the walls began in 1555, enclosing this beautiful city, which boasts countless picturesque corners, cobbled streets and emblematic buildings.
When you visit, not only will you enjoy strolling through its narrow streets, but, on reaching the highest point, you will find the lookout point of the Santa Lucía Bastion, with its breathtaking views of Ibiza’s harbour, the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, the Archaeological Museum, the Convent of San Cristóbal and many more historic landmarks that make this visit truly fascinating.
2. SES SALINES NATURE PARK: NATURE AND BIODIVERSITY
In the south of Ibiza lies the Ses Salines Nature Park, an environmental treasure that combines stunning landscapes, tradition and biodiversity. This protected area preserves ancient salt flats, which serve as a haven for migratory birds such as flamingos. Signposted paths make it easy for visitors to wander among dunes, pine groves and vast expanses of crystallised salt.
This landscape is inextricably linked to Ibiza’s rich culture through the skill of the salineros or ‘salt harvesters’, who for centuries have extracted Ibiza’s ‘white gold’. Thanks to their skill and know-how, salt is today one of the island’s best-known products.
Before you leave, be sure to stop at Ses Salines Beach, one of Ibiza’s most famous beaches, known for its turquoise waters and fine sand that make it an authentic natural paradise.
3. ES VEDRÀ: A SUNSET MUST
Lying off the south-west coast of Ibiza, Es Vedrà is a protected islet, which, although not open to visitors, can be admired in all its splendour from the mainland. The best viewpoints are Cala d’Hort, perfect for capturing unforgettable sunsets, and Es Savinar Tower, situated just a short walk away.
Apart from its beauty, the islet is shrouded in legends of magnetic energies, mythical beings and mysterious phenomena, making it a place of pilgrimage for those seeking a spiritual connection – or simply an awe-inspiring view that will remain fixed in your mind’s eye forever.
4. LAS DALIAS STREET MARKET: CRAFTS AND THE HIPPY WAY OF LIFE
Situated in San Carlos, Las Dalias is one of the island’s most iconic street markets. Each week, artisans, designers and musicians fill this open-air space with more than 200 stalls in a mix of boho fashion, artisanal jewellery, original décor and natural cosmetics. On Saturday mornings, its hippy spirit is revived with unique items and live music.
In summer, it transforms into an evening event, featuring soft lighting, a relaxed atmosphere, chill-out music and international gastronomy.
Workshops, children’s activities and cultural events are also organised, making it an experience for the whole family to enjoy. There’s more to this market than just shopping – indeed, it reflects the free and creative spirit Ibiza is known for.
5. CAN MARÇÀ CAVE: AN UNDERGROUND ADVENTURE
On Ibiza’s northern coast, just outside Puerto de San Miguel, lies the famous Can Marçà Cave, nestling beneath a cliff that boasts magnificent sea views.
Inside the cave you will find numerous passageways filled with illuminated stalactites and stalagmites, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
The visit ends with a stunning view of the cliff and turquoise sea from the cave’s entrance; an idyllic landscape that makes the experience even more unique.
6. SANT ANTONI DE PORTMANY: FUN, THE SEA AND MEMORABLE SUNSETS
Sant Antoni de Portmany, situated on the island’s west coast, is famous for its nightlife, especially in summer when the streets and beaches come alive with music, bars and open-air parties. But this town offers more than the island’s best evening entertainment: its promenade, the Passeig de Ses Fonts, is lined with terraces, shops and restaurants with sea views.
What’s more, San Antonio Bay is one of the largest and calmest in Europe, making it perfect for a boat trip or for enjoying water sports.
7. A TRIP TO FORMENTERA: A TASTE OF PARADISE
Formentera is just half an hour from Ibiza by boat, a fabulous island boasting white sandy beaches bathed by crystalline waters. Your trip to Ibiza is the perfect opportunity to visit Formentera as well.
Once there, you will discover authentic treasures such as Ses Illetes – a strip of sand surrounded by sea on both sides – and Llevant Beach, the ultimate spot to relax and recharge.
To complete your day, a stop at one of the beach bars near the port is a must, where you can savour delicious dishes made with local produce.
Including Formentera in your Ibiza travel plans is to treat yourself to a matchless experience of sheer relaxation, nature and the beauty of the Mediterranean.
