DISCOVER MALLORCA’S BEST CYCLING ROUTES

Today, 3rd June, is World Bicycle Day, the perfect opportunity to celebrate the delights of cycling on Mallorca, famous not only for its beaches but also as a paradise for cycling lovers.

The mild, sunny climate the  island enjoys for much of the year, together with its well-maintained roads and paths, make Mallorca an ideal destination for cyclists from around the world. The island boasts a wealth of routes suitable for cyclists of all abilities. Whether you’re just starting to discover the world of cycling, a professional, or you simply feel like discovering an alternative way to explore Mallorca, in this post we give you details of some of the routes available and where you can stay. So tune up your bike and join us as we discover these magnificent routes!

Easy routes

Playa de Palma – Palma

This route is just the thing for those  looking for a peaceful ride with sea views. If you’ve chosen one of our hotels in Playa de Palma for your holiday on Mallorca, then this is an excursion not to be missed! You can start from the hotel you chose for your holiday: the  THB El Cid, THB María Isabel or THB Niágara. From your point of departure, follow the sea promenade as far as the centre of Palma, keeping the cathedral in your sights. This is a flat and clearly signposted route, just the thing for beginners and families. Along the way, you can stop off for a cooling dip in the sea, enjoy a drink at one of the terraces, and once in Palma, explore the city’s historic quarter.

  • Distance: 13 km
  • Estimated time: 1 hour
  • Total ascent: 50 m
  • Type of bike: Cruiser bike

Ruta Playa de Palma - Palma

Porto Cristo – Cala Millor

This is another excellent route for amateur cyclists. Starting from Porto Cristo, this coastal path heads east as far as  Cala Millor. The route is fairly flat and takes you past several of the island’s most spectacular beaches. It is ideal for enjoying a day in the sunshine by the sea whilst you also get some exercise. We recommend staying at the  THB Felip, our hotel in Porto Cristo. There you can take a well-deserved break, chilling in the wellness zone or enjoying a relaxing massage after an intense day of sport.

  • Distance: 18 km
  • Estimated time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Total ascent: 100 m
  • Type of bike: Cruiser bike

Intermediate routes

Palma – Valldemossa

If you’re looking for a more challenging route, then this is just the thing. Starting in Palma, it takes you into the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and up to the picturesque town of  Valldemossa. This is a gentle climb, making it accessible for anyone with an intermediate level. On reaching Valldemossa, you’ll be rewarded by the sight of a unique town featuring Mallorca’s traditional marés sandstone houses and its delicious gastronomy. We strongly recommend the refreshing almond slushie and the sweet coca de patata pastries!

  • Distance: 25 km
  • Estimated time: 2-3 hours
  • Total ascent: 400 m
  • Type of bike: Road bike

Can Picafort – Capdepera

Can Picafort, nestling in the northeast of the island, is also a great starting point for a bike ride. What’s more, our hotels in  Can Picafort provide a bicycle hire service, so there’s no excuse for not trying this experience. On leaving the  THB Gran Playa or THB Gran Bahía hotels, head east, going past green fields and small villages, until you come to  Capdepera, where you can visit the medieval castle or relax on one of the many beaches such as  Cala Agulla and Cala Mesquida.

  • Distance: 22 km
  • Estimated time: 2 hours
  • Total ascent: 250 m
  • Type of bike: Road bike

Difficult route

Alcudia – Mirador des Colomer

For more experienced cyclists who love a challenge, this is a truly magnificent option.  Starting from Alcudia, this route takes cyclists through the northern area of the island as far as the breathtaking  Mirador des Colomer viewpoint, close to Formentor Cape. The route includes fairly steep climbs with stunning panoramic views, rewarding cyclists for their efforts with spectacular scenery overlooking the island’s horizon. At our hotel in Alcudia, the    THB Bamboo Alcudia, you can  rent a bicycle or tune up your own to ensure it’s in optimum condition for this challenging but exceptionally rewarding route!

  • Distance: 35 km
  • Estimated time: 3-4 hours
  • Total ascent: 800 m
  • Type of bike: Mountain bike

Tips for enjoying cycling on Mallorca

  1. Stay hydrated: make sure you carry enough water, especially in the summer months, when the temperatures can be really high.
  2. Protect yourself from the sun: use sunscreen and wear sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
  3. Get the right equipment: make sure your bike is in tiptop condition and carry basic spares such as inner tubes and a pump.
  4. Plan your trip: check the routes and weather conditions before setting out to avoid any surprises.

A sustainable way of touring the island

Cycling as a leisure activity and way of getting around Mallorca is not just a unique and healthy experience, but it also contributes to the sustainability of the island. By opting to cycle, you will be reducing your carbon footprint, cutting pollution and contributing to the conservation of Mallorca’s magnificent natural landscapes. What’s more, getting around by bike enables you to explore places that are not accessible by car, and connect more closely with nature and the local culture. At  THB hotels, we support sustainable tourism and are proud to offer services that promote a more eco-friendly and responsible lifestyle.
