Must-do activities for this Christmas on Majorca

Christmas is coming, bringing with it plans for festive celebrations with friends and family. Christmas is all about tradition, fun and sharing, but it is also a great time for relaxing and recharging your batteries before getting back to your everyday routine.

Here are our ideas for some great activities you won’t want to miss out on if you’re spending the festive season on Majorca.

Sample the island’s gastronomy!

Food is an essential part of the festive celebrations. Majorca boasts a wide choice of traditional Christmas dishes and sweet treats you simply have to try. The delicious options include filled galet pasta shells, turkey, Majorcan turrón nougat or suckling pig.

Tour the Christmas markets

Christmas markets abound at this time of year; here are some of our recommendations:

  • Plaza Mayor

21st November to 6th January

Palma’s Main Square is packed with Christmas stalls, as well as a host of amusements and rides for children. The famous Plaça de Cort nativity scene, situated nearby, is also well worth a visit.

  • Pueblo Español

5th to 15th December

The streets of Pueblo Español are dressed in their finest for Christmas. A fabulous setting filled with lights and lined with stalls selling food, drink and gifts. You’ll also have the chance to meet Santa Claus. Who would want to miss an opportunity like that?

  • Puerto Portals

18th December to 6th January

Enjoy the festive atmosphere at the Porto Portals Christmas market. You’ll find dozens of stalls filled with great gift ideas and mouth-watering food. There’s also an ice rink, where fun and laughter are guaranteed!

Ice skating in Port Adriano

If you’re a skating fan, then don’t miss a trip to Majorca’s largest ice rink. No fewer than 300 m2, plus a 30 metre slide for all the family to enjoy.

Other activities include exhibitions, ice skating lessons and a Christmas concert.

A tour of Palma’s nativity scenes

Visiting the various nativity scenes dotted around Palma is a great way of exploring the city and admiring the streets, which are particularly pretty at this time of year. Here’s our list of nativity scenes that are well worth a visit:

  • Cort nativity scene
  • Majorcan nativity scene at the La Misericòrdia Cultural Centre
  • El Corte Inglés department store nativity scene. Fourth floor, Avenida d’Alexandre Rosselló
  • C&A shopping mall nativity scene
  • Nativity scene at the Balearic Island’s Centre for Military Culture and History
  • Club de Mar Mallorca marina nativity scene

Come and see the Three Kings!

In keeping with Spanish tradition, on the night of 5th January, the Three Kings parade through towns and cities throughout the country. A truly magical time for little ones.

Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar can be seen on their floats, parading through the streets of Palma, handing out sweets and greeting the children. An event not to be missed!

Get away from the city and relax

The Christmas celebrations aren’t just in Palma. Majorca is dotted with towns and villages with a great Christmassy atmosphere.  If you’re in need of some rest and relaxation, then why not head for Porto Cristo, a fishing town nestling on Majorca’s east coast?

The THB Felip hotel, overlooking the sea, is open all year round. It’s the perfect choice at this time of year, offering guests the chance to enjoy long strolls along the beach, free from the summer crowds. The facilities include a small but delightful Wellness Zone that guarantees a truly relaxing Christmas.

We hope you enjoy our suggestions for a fabulous Christmas on Majorca, and, as we say here…

Bon Nadal! Merry Christmas!
