SUMMER ON MALLORCA, 5 ALTERNATIVE PLANS BEYOND SUN AND SAND

When thinking about what makes the perfect holiday, sun and sand destinations are the first thing that springs to mind. Mallorca is the ideal choice for enjoying a fabulous getaway, bathing in crystalline turquoise waters whilst topping up your golden tan.

Yet this island has much more to offer visitors. Gastronomy, heritage, history, art…Everyone who visits the Balearic Islands simply can’t help falling in love with them. Want to know why? Read on to discover 5 alternative plans to spending the day on the beach on Mallorca.

WHAT TO DO ON MALLORCA

From north to south, Mallorca is simply stunning. Fishing and market activity keep the picturesque towns and villages bustling, with their stone houses and characteristic Mallorcan shutters lining the narrow streets, and where the traditional cured meats and cheeses are still produced. Mallorca is full of charm.

1. THE CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral of Santa María, also known as the Seu, is one of the most beautiful in Spain and well worth a visit, boasting Europe’s largest Gothic rose window. You can visit it on your own, or take one of the guided tours.

The THB El Cid**** and THB María Isabel**** hotels, situated in Playa de Palma, are just a few minutes’ drive from Palma city centre.

2. THE TOWN OF SANTANYÍ

Situated in the southeast of the island, this picturesque town has all the charm and authenticity of the Mallorcan countryside. It boasts a prime location, with more than 48 km of coastline and the Balearic Islands’ second largest nature park.

The THB Sur Mallorca**** Hotel (Colònia de Sant Jordi), 20 minutes’ drive away, is the perfect choice for those eager to explore this part of the island.

3. S’ALBUFERA NATURE PARK

The perfect place to discover the local flora and fauna whilst admiring the breathtaking views. The park has been a protected nature reserve since 1988 and the Balearic Islands’ most important and largest wetland.

The THB Gran Playa**** and THB Gran Bahía**** hotels in Can Picafort are within easy reach of the Nature Park and the perfect spot for relaxing after a day out.

4. DRACH (DRAGON) CAVES

These are 4 large caves located in the municipality of Manacor, just a short distance from Porto Cristo where the THB Felip**** hotel is located. Formed by rain erosion, they feature a large underground lake (one of the longest in the world), known as Martel Lake, some 115 m long and 30 m wide.

5. ARTÀ MARKET

Held every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the town centre, this market is a great favourite with residents and tourists alike. The stalls sell a wide range of produce, including fresh fruit and vegetables, traditional Mallorcan foods, local crafts, textiles and footwear, etc.

Just 12 km from the town of Cala Ratjada, home to the THB Guya Playa****, THB Cala Lliteras**** and THB Dos Playas*** hotels. Local landmarks include the famous Cala Agulla and the lighthouse at Capdepera Point.

First time on Mallorca? It’s a destination worth taking your time over, exploring its myriad charms and discovering its traditions, landscapes and clean fresh air.
